Postponement of
India-Pakistan Peace Cup Snooker Championship
The fourth
Indo-Pak Peace Cup snooker Championship has been postponed once
again due to political turmoil in Pakistan. The event, which was
slated to be staged at the Siri Fort Sports Complex from December 2
to 6, has been cancelled for the third time with the mutual
agreement of the Billiards and Snooker Federations of both the
countries.
Billiards and Snooker Federation of India Vice President Ravi Tandon
said the BSFI and its Pakistani counterpart felt the situation was
not conducive to hold the event as per the schedule.
"In the wake of the emergency in Pakistan, we (BSFI and PBSF) have
decided to postponed the tournament," he told PTI. "The next dates
would be tentatively in February but a decision would be taken only
after discussion with the PBSF officials when they visit India
again," he said.
When pointed out that the Pakistan cricket team is already playing
in the country, Tandon said, "there were also reports of threat
e-mails to the cricketers, so how can we take the risk." The
tournament was first postponed by two days to allow the cueists some
rest after the ongoing IBSF World Snooker Championship at Korat,
Thailand.
Previously, the Peace Cup was initially postponed due to the massive
earthquake that rocked the region in 2005 and later could not be
held due to a series of bomb blasts in Mumbai. Thereafter,
non-availability of players due to the Doha Asian Games and other
international engagements prevented its staging.
