IBSF Billiards
Committee Chairman's Report
Pankaj Advani wins both formats at the
2008 IBSF World Billiards Championships in Bangalore, India.
Pankaj Advani (India) won a magnificent
double at the 2008 IBSF World Billiards Championships held in
Bangalore, India from 1st September 2008 to 10th September 2008,
winning both the 150 up format championship and the timed format
championship. Advani was in fine form throughout both championships,
and Indian players dominated the results, providing all 4
semi-finalists for both events.
The championships were hosted by the
Indian Billiards and Snooker Federation and the Karnataka State
Billiards Association in Bangalore. The 150 up points format was
held first, from 1st September 2008 to 5th September 2008 inclusive,
and the timed format championship was held from 6th September 2008
to 10th September 2008 inclusive.
The IBSF was represented by Mr. Ray
Habgood, Chairman of the IBSF Billiards Committee. President Mr.
Pascal Guillaume was unable to attend due to illness.
There was a very high standard of play
throughout, totally befitting the prestige of the World
Championships. Geet Sethi from India recorded the two top breaks of
the championships, with magnificent contributions of 885 and 750.
In the 150 up points format played
first, there were 32 players representing 10 countries, including
representatives from EBOS, playing in the championships for the
first time. In the timed format there were also 32 players
representing 10 IBSF member countries, so both formats continue to
be supported equally.
The organizers, with magnificent
assistance from the sponsors and a high level of support from local
government, are to be congratulated for their splendid hosting of
the Championships. The detailed planning and execution by the hosts
was excellent. The renowned Indian hospitality was splendid and
nothing was too much trouble for them. There was very extensive TV
and press coverage of both events.
The referees under Chief referee Mr.
Ger Murray (Republic of Ireland) again came from round the world to
officiate in an able manner, and the tournament was played in the
wonderful spirit of true sportsmanship.
