German snooker squad for Mumbai

 

The concept is that it is a friendly match with no prize money and no entry fee. All you take back are memories and trophies.

A five-member German snooker squad will arrive in Mumbai for an Indo-German four match series against the city’s top clubs, from November 21 to 25.

Oliver Garnys and Heath Williams, who are regulars on the European circuit, will be joined by Carsten Messig, Peter Kloppisch and Stephan Pietsch. The quintet will face NSCI and Khar Gymkhana at the NSCI on November 21, CCI club on November 22, NSCI club on November 24 and Otters Club on November 25.

The Mumbai clubs will be represented by twice Asian champion Yasin Merchant, Asian under-21 bronze medallist Ishpreet Singh Chedda, Shivam Arora, Faisal Khan, Jatinder Dawer Hasan Badami and Behari Bajaj, Nikhil Ootam Abhimanyu Gandhi, Angad Bhatty and Zenul Arsiwala of among other leading city cueists.

“It all started on Facebook when I was invited to Germany in 2014,” revealed cueist Sangeeta Hemchand who initiated the competition along with Oliver Garnys. “After football and hockey, snooker, pool and skittles are very popular in Germany. They have the (snooker) Bundesliga among different cities & clubs & international tournaments like German Open, Ruhr Open and Paul Hunter Classic (tournaments) where top Cueists of the world take part Thorsten Muller is also a well known referee on the world circuit.”

Added Sangeeta: “After Oliver suggested we hold the competition, we soon got the support of (CCI president) Kekoo Nicholson & Behari Bajaj, Angad, Zenul and the Otters Club committee and Jayantilal Shah , the President of NSCI & NSCI committee and Jatinder Dawer who planned & organized everything.

“Snooker has evolved in Germany since the past 25 years,” explained Oliver Garnys. “It is so popular, that we have to book our tables online and travel 100kms to play or practice (before someone else does the booking). Some players even own tables While in Mumbai, we will also study club concept.
