National 8Ball & 9Ball Pool Championship 2008

Kolkata - West Bengal

16-26 May 2008

Maiden 9Ball Pool Title for Anuja now !!!

Anuja Chandra of PSPB, wife of reigning National 9Ball Pool Champion Manan Chandra, kept it in the family domain when she too won her maiden 9Ball Pool title by beating rank outsider, Indira Gowda of Karnatak 5 – 1 in the final of ONGC-Spring Club National Women’s 9Ball Pool championship at the Spring Club, Kolkata on Sunday.

In a one sided final, the 2006 Arjuna Awardee in Billiards and Snooker, racked out twice when Indira broke --- not giving any chance to her opponent. Indira struggled to get the touch which had carried her to her first national final. With this win Anuja becomes the only player to have won all the national titles in Cue Sports, Men & Women inclusive!

Anuja had won the 8Ball National title last year, and she now has 11 national titles to her credit including six in billiards and three in Snooker. With her sister winning the 8Ball title yesterday, her only regret was that, due to luck of the draw and seedings, the two sisters had to clash in the semi finals instead of making both the finals a family affair!

In the men’s 8Ball event, things started warming up when the underdogs started chasing the favourites. Local lad Shahbaz Adil Khan of PSPB shocked Dharminder Lilly 6-3, while Charles of Mizoram upset national champion D. Joshi 6-5 after defeating Chetan Chhabra the other day. Neeraj Kumar of Bihar accounted for India # 3, Rafath Habib 6-3. However, due to the double elimination format being followed for the first time this year, all these losing favourites still have a chance for a go at the National title.
