Chandu, Arun to fight for top honour

Having been around the baize table for over two decades,  top seeded  Chandu Shah, of P. J. Hindu Gymkhana,  knew how and when  to turn in screws as notched up two impressive wins in the billiards semifinal 4-player league of the Malabar Hill Club-State senior snooker/Billiards Selection tournament, hosted by Malabar Hill Club on Tuesday.

First to come under Chandu’s  onslaught was North India Association’s Mahesh Jagdale, who just failed to reproduce the form  that has helped him to overcome home favourite Rajeev Sharma  in the quarterfinals.  Chandu’s mesmerizing display first saw him beating Mahesh 150-61, 150-96, 150-69, 150-122 and then with consistent breaks of 40s and 50s, he ended Vishal Madan, of Chembur Gymkhana, good run with  a 75-150, 150-45, 150-59, 1561-29, 152-104 win.

Arun Agarwal,  seeded second, on the other hand, was just unstoppable. Poor Mahesh  could do nothing  much to prevent Arun for scoring a comprehensive win. The only time Mahesh appeared to be  making a match of it was in the fourth frame when he made a break of 43, but then it proved to be just a small consolation for him as Arun ran away with the help  of a couple of breaks of over 50 plus a century one in the second frame to romp home with a 150- 25, 150 -14, 153 -69, 152)-111 win. Earlier, however, Arun did face some tough time against Chembur Gymkhana’s Vishal Madan, who after down 0-3, fought back to grab the fourth frame. But like Mahesh, Vishal’s resistance crumbled in the following frame as Arun just did not given him much scope  for a fight back.
