Jagdale crashes out

Fancied Mahesh Jagdale of North Indian Association crashed out of the All India Sohrab Gandhi Open Handicap Billiards & Naval Tata Open Handicap Snooker Tournament, organised
and hosted by Elphinstone Cricket Club, VT, on Sunday.

In one of the most significant upsets in the snooker competition, Siddharth Subramaniam of Goregaon Sports Club shocked Jagdale 86-116, 102-93, 112-70 in an exciting fourth round.

Jagdale, with a +35 handicap, got off to a good start with a break of 46 to snatch the opening frame. But Subramaniam, enjoying a +50 handicap, fired a significant break of 41 to clinch a tight second frame on the blue. An inspired Subramaniam thrived on impressive potting and fired another crucial break of 30 in the decider to leave Jagdale stranded.

In another exciting fourth round tie, Harsh Thacker of Mulund snatched a narrow 2-1 win to upset Arun Kumar of Elphinstone Cricket Club in a black ball finish. After the cueists traded a frame each, Kumar, who needed two snookers, unfortunately endured a black in-off before Thacker returned to pot the last ball to join Subramaniam in the pre-quarter-finals.

In one more upset, Iqbal Rokadia of Elphinstone CC came up with a late burst to stun Kirti Parekh of PJ Hindu Gymkhana 2-0 in the third round. After the score was tied at 85-all in the second frame, Rokadia made amends for missing a yellow sitter with a brilliant long green pot and capped his win with a delightful pink pot off the cushion.

Pranav Desai of Santacruz Gymkhana moved into the fourth round after ending Malcolm Kapadia’s run with a 2-0 win.
