The second Selection Tournament for Snooker for 2010 Asian Games got underway today at Clube De Tennis Gaspar Dias, Miramar, Goa. The top 9 players of the country which include the likes of 7 times World champion Pankaj Advani, two times Asian Snooker champion and gold medalist in Asian Games Yasin Merchant and former Asian Champion Alok Kumar  were seen pitted against the young brigade of  Sourav Kothari, Manan Chandra, Aditya Mehta, Brijesh Damani, Shahbaaz Khan and Kamal Chawla.

Organised by the Goa Cue Sports Association, the 8 day long Cue Sports extravaganza will see 8 times World Billiards Champion Geeth Sethi, former World Champions Ashok Sandilya, Rupesh Shah and former World no.2 Devendra Joshi and Dhruv Sitwala joining in for the billiards selection tournament on the 2nd June.

The morning session saw young Brijesh Damani, a gold medalists in the team snooker event of the 2009 Vietnam Indoor Asian Games, going down tamely against highly experienced Yasin Merchant in the first frane by 16-58.  Damani however had a different story to tell in the next 4 frames as he went on in a whirlwind fashion to wrap up the next four frames with breaks of 58 in the second, 52 in the fourth and an outstanding full table screw back pink pot followed by a regulation black pot to clinch the frame and the match 4-1.

In the other match of the morning session India no. 2 Sourav Kothari exhibited a good quality snooker as he blanked another very talented cueist and bronze medalist in World Snooker  Manan Chandra by 4-0.  Sourav took the first frame comfortably with a nicely compiled break of 41 points.  In the second frame Chandra came back from behind with some exceptional potting and tactical skills and when was all set to level the proceeding, missed a regulation brown pot off the spot. Sourav thereafter made no mistake as he won the frame to go ahead by2-0 after taking the remaining color balls on the table. Patches of brilliance in the following frames did not help Manan much as Sourav stuck to his guns firmly and and won 4-0.

The lone Indian in the English professional circuit, Aditya Mehta enthralled the crowd with his touch play in the morning session as he outclassed Kamal Chawla 4-1 with breaks of 41 in the second and 57 in the third but could not live up to the expectation as had to bite the dust against former Asian Snooker champion Alok Kumar. With intense focus Alok brought back his old rhythm and overpowered Aditya to win 4-2.

In the late night match, Brijesh also defeated Current National Snooker champion, Pankaj Advani in decider frame.
