Alok upturns Shahbaz's applecart

Alok Kumar, a former National and Asian Snooker Champion created a big turbulence to halt the smooth sailing of Shahbaaz Khan at the 2nd National Selection Tournament, for the 2010 Asian Games, being played here at the Clube Tennis de Gasper Dias, Miramar,Goa.

In a battle of Youth and Experience, Alok held the string tightly from the beginning and kept Shahbaaz   starving for potting opportunities. Shahbaaz who stroked the ball with pin point precision yesterday found his rhythm going down due to long lay offs and kept on trying risky long shots. Alok on the other hand kept his head down and capitalized on every mistakes made by his young and highly talented opponent. After winning the first two frames comfortably, Alok further established his stranglehold on the proceeding by clinching the third with an immaculate break of 77 points. Shahbaaz did raise some hope of a great battle ahead by winning the fourth in a closely fought encounter but could not hold the candle for long against the potting prowess of alok and eventually lost the match by 4-1.

In another match Manan Chandra blanked his gold medal winning team mate at the 2009 Vietnam Asian Indoor Games Brijesh  Damani.  Manan found his rhythm back in the match and with his characteristic style of break building with precise cue ball control compiled two commendable breaks of 70 and 61 in the 2nd and 4th frame respectively and demolish Damani by 4-0.

In sheer battles of attrition which were stretched to the full length, Pankaj Advani prevailed over Sourav Kothari by 4-3 and Aditya Mehta got the better of Yasin Merchant by an identical margin.

Later in the evening Alok Kumar, the only probable for Asian Games for all the three events of Billiards, Snooker and Pool posted another important win against Manan Chandra by 4-2 with a break of 100 in the opening frame and kept his hope alive for the top position in the league table.
