Jadhav, Karande crash out
Favourites
Ajay Jadhav and Prakash Karande frittered away 2-0 leads to crash
out in the first round, on a dramatic day of upsets, in the 4th Pro
Classic 6-Red Snooker Tournament for markers, organised and hosted
by Islam Gymkhana, on Saturday.
Santosh Abnave
of CCI caused the first upset of the tournament when he rallied from
a 0-2 deficit to shock Ajay Jadhav of Islam Gymkhana 19-29, 14-38,
38-4, 39-21, 31-24 in a thriller that went down to the wire and
ended in a black-ball finish.
Jadhav relaxed
his grip after surging comfortably to an early lead and looked set
to win in straight frames. But Abnave changed the script with a
brilliant recovery. He chose to believe in himself while welcoming
the openings that were offered by Jadhav.
After drawing
level and forcing the decider, Abnave led 18-15 in the fifth and
final frame after earning eight crucial points following a
foul-and-a-miss on two occasions. But Jadhav returned to cannon the
brown in the top right pocket in spectacular fashion and potted the
blue to snatch a vital 24-18 lead. But his elbow quivered while
missing the simple pink in the left centre pocket. Abnave seized the
opportunity and sank in the pink and black in a nail-biting finish
to storm into the second round.
In another
riveting contest, Samuel Selven of Otters Club overcame Prakash
Karande of CCI 18-32, 10-35, 37-24, 43-33, 51-12 in a match between
